Ego defense mechanisms start out pretty benignly as a way to protect us and keep us safe. But what often happens is that they tend to become less and less useful over time. Even in adulthood, we tend to fall back on those tired old defense mechanisms because they have become habitual. And because we engage these old ineffective strategies more or less unconsciously, we don’t necessarily realize that they may be causing more problems than they are solving. So, what is the solution?
